A practical checklist before buying a used car in the UAE.
Used Car Inspection Checklist
🚨 Accident History
Ask for the vehicle history and check whether the car had major accidents. Look for uneven body panels, different paint shades, welding marks and poor repairs.
🔢 Chassis / VIN Number
Check that the VIN or chassis number on the vehicle matches the registration documents. Do not ignore signs of tampering or damage around the identification area.
🔧 Engine
Listen for unusual noise, check for oil leaks, smoke, overheating and warning lights. A cold-start inspection can reveal problems that are hidden after the engine warms up.
⚙️ Gearbox
During the test drive, check for delayed shifting, slipping, shaking, unusual noise or hard gear changes.
❄️ AC System
In the UAE, strong AC is very important. Test cooling at idle and while driving, and listen for unusual compressor noise.
🛞 Tyres & Suspension
Check tyre age and uneven wear. During the drive, listen for suspension noise and notice whether the car pulls to one side.
📏 Mileage
Compare mileage with the car's overall condition and available service history. Extremely low mileage should be checked carefully rather than accepted automatically.
📚 Service History
Ask for maintenance records. Regular oil changes and documented repairs can help show how the vehicle was maintained.
🌍 GCC vs Imported
Ask whether the car is GCC specification or imported. Imported vehicles may have a different accident or environmental history and specifications.
💧 Flood / Water Damage
Check for water smell, rust in unusual places, moisture under carpets and electrical problems. Water damage can cause expensive long-term issues.
