⚠️ Car Problems & Solutions

Use symptoms to decide what to check and how urgent it is. A correct diagnosis needs inspection and testing—do not replace expensive parts by guessing.

Stop and tow the car for red oil-pressure warning, severe overheating, brake failure, heavy smoke/fire smell, fuel leak, major steering failure, flashing check-engine light with shaking, or a damaged tyre that cannot be driven safely.

🌡️ Engine overheating

Signs

Temperature gauge rising, warning message, steam, coolant smell, weak AC at idle or coolant loss.

Possible causes

Leak, low coolant, radiator/fan fault, thermostat, water pump, blocked radiator or head-gasket damage.

What to do

  • Switch off AC, stop safely and shut down if temperature remains high.
  • Never open a hot radiator/pressurised cap.
  • After cooling, check visible leaks and recovery-tank level only if safe.
  • Pressure-test cooling system, test fans/thermostat and scan temperature data.

🛢️ Oil leak / oil warning

Signs

Oil spots, burning smell, blue smoke, low dipstick or red oil-pressure light.

Checks

  • A red pressure light means stop the engine; oil level alone may not be the cause.
  • Inspect filter, drain plug, sump, valve cover, seals and oil mixed with coolant.
  • Blue exhaust smoke can indicate oil burning, turbo, valve-seal or piston wear.
  • Confirm pressure mechanically before major repair decisions.

⚙️ Automatic gearbox / CVT

Signs

Delay engaging D/R, slipping, shudder, hard shifts, whining, overheating warning or burnt-smelling fluid.

Checks

  • Test cold and fully warm; drive gently through all normal gears.
  • Scan transmission module and review service history.
  • Check correct fluid type/level using manufacturer procedure.
  • Do not assume a fluid change will repair internal wear; diagnose first.

❄️ Weak or warm AC

Possible causes

Low refrigerant/leak, condenser airflow, fan, compressor, expansion valve, cabin filter, blend door or electrical fault.

Checks

  • Measure vent temperature at idle and driving speed.
  • Confirm condenser/radiator fans run and engine does not overheat.
  • Use pressure/leak testing; repeatedly “adding gas” without fixing a leak wastes money.
  • Check cooling from all vents and rear AC.

🔋 Battery / starting / charging

Signs

Slow crank, clicking, dim lights, battery light, repeated jump-starts or random electrical faults.

Checks

  • Load-test battery and inspect terminals/ground cables.
  • Test alternator charging voltage and parasitic drain.
  • UAE heat shortens battery life; read production date and warranty.
  • A battery warning while driving can mean charging-system failure, not simply a bad battery.

🛑 Brakes

Signs

Squeal/grinding, vibration, soft pedal, pulling, ABS light or longer stopping distance.

Checks

  • Inspect pad and disc thickness/condition, fluid, hoses, callipers and leaks.
  • A soft or sinking pedal is urgent; do not keep driving.
  • Vibration can be disc/runout or suspension/tyre related—measure before replacing.
  • Scan ABS faults; do not cover a warning light.

🛞 Tyres, alignment & suspension

Signs

Uneven wear, vibration, humming, pulling, clunking, bouncing or steering play.

Checks

  • Read tyre size, load/speed rating and four-digit production week/year.
  • Inspect cracks, bulges, repairs, tread and pressure when cold.
  • Uneven wear can indicate alignment, bent chassis, worn bushes, shocks or steering parts.
  • Check wheel balance and bearings; alignment alone cannot fix worn parts.

🚨 Check-engine light / rough running

Signs

Misfire, shaking, low power, poor fuel economy, smoke or warning light.

Checks

  • A flashing light with shaking can damage the catalytic converter—stop and diagnose.
  • Read codes and live data; a code identifies a system, not always the failed part.
  • Check plugs/coils, air leaks, fuel pressure/injectors, sensors and compression as indicated.
  • After repairs, confirm codes remain clear and readiness tests complete.

⚡ Electrical / flood faults

Signs

Several unrelated warnings, windows/locks failing, intermittent no-start, damp smell or corroded connectors.

Checks

  • Check battery/grounds first, then fuses, wiring diagrams and module communication.
  • Inspect under carpets, seats, fuse boxes and spare-wheel well for water/silt/corrosion.
  • Scan every module. Replacing one module may require coding and may not cure corroded wiring.
  • Severe flood damage can cause recurring safety faults; consider walking away.

💨 Exhaust smoke guide

  • Blue: burning oil.
  • Thick white after warm-up: coolant or other internal issue; brief cold condensation can be normal.
  • Black: excessive fuel/air-control fault.
  • Steam under bonnet: possible coolant leak/overheating.

Check when cold and warm; diagnose with scan, pressure, leak-down/compression or cooling-system tests as appropriate.

How to avoid a wrong repair

  1. Write when the problem happens: cold/hot, speed, gear, AC on/off, braking or turning.
  2. Record warning lights and a short safe video/audio; do not erase codes first.
  3. Ask the workshop for diagnostic results, not only a parts quotation.
  4. Request old parts back where practical and keep invoices with mileage.
  5. After repair, repeat the same driving condition and scan again.
  6. For engine, gearbox, chassis, airbag or flood diagnosis, get a second independent opinion before a very expensive repair.

Used-car problem check before buying

Roadworthiness inspection is not the same as a full pre-purchase mechanical warranty. For Dubai inspection options, use the official RTA vehicle inspection service.

Maintenance principle: Follow the exact manufacturer's schedule and fluid specification for the VIN, engine and gearbox. “Universal” fluid or a guessed service interval can create expensive damage.
