š”ļø UAE Car Insurance Guide
Understand what you are buying before registration: cover type, insured value, excess, repair conditions, add-ons, exclusions and the correct accident-claim process.
Third-party vs comprehensive
| Feature | Third-Party Liability (TPL) | Comprehensive / Loss & Damage |
|---|---|---|
| Main protection | Liability for covered injury or property damage caused to third parties. | Third-party liability plus covered loss/damage to your own insured vehicle. |
| Your own at-fault damage | Not covered. | Normally covered subject to policy terms, excess and exclusions. |
| Theft/fire/weather | Your car is not normally covered. | May be covered under standard wording or endorsement; confirm flood/natural-peril terms in writing. |
| Typical use | Lower-value/older cars when the owner accepts own-repair risk. | Newer, financed, expensive or difficult-to-repair cars. |
| Price | Usually lower. | Usually higher and affected by car value, driver, repair type and claims. |
Read the official CBUAE Motor Insurance Rulebook for the unified UAE policy framework.
Information needed for a quote
- Emirates ID, UAE driving licence and contact details
- Mulkiya for renewal, or exact VIN/chassis and vehicle details before purchase
- Make, model, year, trim, GCC/imported specification, use and estimated value
- Driver age/licence history and claims/no-claims information
- Finance/mortgage details if the vehicle is financed
Disclose modifications, commercial/delivery use, imported specification and previous major damage honestly. Incorrect material information can create claim problems.
Compare quotes line by line
- Insured value: the vehicle value stated in the policyānot only the premium.
- Excess/deductible: what you pay on a covered own-damage claim; ask about additional young-driver, unknown-driver, off-road or agency excess.
- Repair: agency/dealer, approved garage or reimbursement basis; check age limits and parts terms.
- Territory: UAE only or approved GCC/Oman extension. A UAE policy does not automatically cover every country.
- Driver limits: named drivers, age restrictions and valid-licence requirements.
- Natural perils: flood, storm and rain wording plus exclusions.
- Roadside and replacement car: limits, days, class and conditions.
- Claims support: reporting channels, towing, garage network and complaint contact.
Common optional covers / add-ons
- Agency/dealer repair
- Roadside assistance, towing, battery boost and tyre help
- Replacement/rental car for a limited period
- Personal accident cover for driver and passengers
- Oman/GCC geographical extension where offered
- Off-road cover for eligible 4x4 use
- Windscreen cover or excess waiver
- Natural-peril/flood clarification or enhanced cover
Names and limits differ by insurer. Ask for the schedule and endorsement, not only a verbal āyesā.
Important exclusions and claim risks
- Driving without a valid licence or outside the licensed vehicle category
- Use outside declared purpose, such as undeclared delivery/commercial use
- Racing, deliberate acts or driving under alcohol/drugs
- Mechanical/electrical breakdown, wear and tear, depreciation and poor maintenance
- Unauthorised repairs before insurer approval
- Leaving the accident scene or failing to obtain the required police accident report
- Unapproved modifications or material facts not disclosed
- Geographical use outside the policy territory
Exact consequences depend on the unified policy, schedule and endorsements. Read your own contract.
Before insuring a used or imported car
- Request quotes using the exact VIN before paying a non-refundable deposit.
- Tell the insurer whether it is GCC, US, Canadian, Japanese, European or Korean specification.
- Ask whether comprehensive cover is offered and whether an inspection is required.
- Confirm insured value, repair type, imported-parts treatment and total-loss basis in writing.
- Check that name, VIN, plate, make/model, year and use are correct before payment.
- After issue, verify policy start/end date and keep the electronic policy accessible.
What to do after an accident
- Stop safely, switch on hazard lights and protect people from traffic. For injury, fire or serious danger call emergency services immediately.
- Do not argue about liability or admit something you do not understand. Follow police instructions.
- Report through the applicable police channel/app and obtain the official accident report/reference required for insurance.
- Photograph the scene only when safe: positions, plates, damage, road and signals. Exchange verified contact/insurance details.
- Contact the insurer/assistance number promptly. Provide police report, licence, Mulkiya, policy and requested photos.
- Use the insurer's authorised towing/garage route. Do not begin repairs before approval unless emergency safety action is necessary and accepted.
- Keep claim number, estimates, approvals, invoices and messages. Check excess and replacement-car entitlement.
Renewal, cancellation and sale
- Start comparing before expiry so registration is not delayed.
- Check whether a no-claims certificate/discount is available.
- When selling, ask the insurer about cancellation or transfer rules and required proof. Do not assume the buyer is covered by your policy.
- If financed, obtain the lender's required insurance/mortgage endorsements.
If a complaint is not resolved
- First submit a formal complaint to the insurer and keep the reference and final response.
- If eligible and still unresolved, use Sanadak, the UAE's independent financial and insurance complaint resolution channel. Check its current eligibility and required waiting period/documents.
- Attach policy, schedule, endorsements, police report, estimates, claim correspondence and complaint response.
The UAE insurance sector is supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE. Use only a properly licensed insurer or intermediary and verify unfamiliar companies through official channels.
